Made from the thousands of surplus containers that sit on docks around the world, shipping container homes are often praised as an eco-friendly and durable alternative to traditional building materials. And while we’ve seen containers in everything from urban farms to off-the-grid getaways and all-in-one pools, it’s rare to see a custom shipping container home on the market.

The latest to catch our eye is this three-bedroom, four-bath home near Phoenix. Measuring 2,969 square feet, the home was designed by engineer Jorge Salcedo and Colombian architect Gregorio Baquero around two stacks of shipping containers with an expansive area in the middle.

The first floor features a large, four-car industrial level workshop—with electric vehicle charging—while the upper floors house the living spaces. The house sits at an angle in line with the mountain range to the south so that the sprawling front balcony and main room enjoy striking views. One might expect a metal house in the desert to be hot, but 100 percent pure aluminum foil reflects the heat and keeps the house cool. The design also includes gigabit, sound, and coaxial cable connectivity throughout to keep you plugged in.

The home’s main three bedrooms and three bathrooms are located upstairs, while an office and fourth bath downstairs has a separate exit and could be leased out for extra income. Conveniently located just ten minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor, the house is also a minute’s walk from hiking in the surrounding hills.
